Why I wrote “Girl in Fatherland”

Most people who learn that I survived torture express surprise at the fact that I am so “sane”, “eloquent”, “strong” or “normal”. When talking about human trafficking, modern slavery, or in fact any kind of organised crime, I often encounter helplessness in others. Worse, even specialists who work in this field declared me to be a “miracle” (for not being a “wreck” now). This kind of mystification takes the responsibility we all have to change our society for the better off the shoulders of ordinary citizens. Victims of crime live among us, every single day, and every single one of us can do something to help them and thus defeat the criminals. GIRL IN FATHERLAND shows that all it takes for Lucy to heal is someone to believe her and stand by her. This “someone” has no specialist skills whatsoever, but is in fact modelled on many brave and warm people I have met and keep meeting in my life.

GIRL IN FATHERLAND is based on true events but reads like a novel. Berlin, 2013: We follow the story of Lucy, a girl who has been split into several pieces by systematic torture and psychological terror. As fragments of Lucy’s memories are being presented like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, the reader is being taken from a seemingly ordinary, happy life into the hell of Lucy’s past and back again into the now apparently changed present of her “real” life. The torture experiments which the Nazis have carried out on Jewish children in the camps (aka the MK Ultra project and others), have been continued well into the present time. Lucy, as we can see by the fact that her father is a Stasi officer, is a victim of the government programmes to create assassins and spies by torturing children. As soon as she has enough memories processed to understand what has happened, she has…

Just clicked on “submit” for the final version of GIRL IN FATHERLAND. Can’t believe I wrote that. Great ending. Disturbing, but great. It tells us what to live for. I find it hard to take full credit for the book. Though I heard from other writers that they have no idea where their art comes from. You just sit down and write it and it happens. In this case I have to admit I’m rather proud of myself. Can’t wait for the launch and to hear what readers think!
